Anatomy for an Artist
April 26th, 2007Have I ever told you guys how much I hate Michael Turner’s art? Specifically, I hate the way he draws women. Haaaate. HATE. Hate hate OMG the HATING.
Because how can you draw Supergirl like she’s some random vapid hoor? And ok, maybe he’s not responsible for the newish midrift Supergirl top (which I also hate), but he sure worked the hell out of it. God, he loooves drawing a linea alba. (Which is the line down the middle of six pack abs. I like using the term. It’s Latin.)
Do you know there’s a whole Draw the Michael Turner Way book? NO. Do NOT draw the Turner way, ok? I mean, he’s better than Rob Fuckups McGee Liefeld, but who isn’t.
Every single Turner chick looks like a vapid hoor. Except Wonder Woman. Cause Wonder Woman won’t stand for that. (Which doesn’t mean you need to keep drawing her like a man, Alex Ross. But other than that, you rule. But not Turner. He sucks.)
The whole reason I brought this up, is because I’m reading Wizard, and there’s an article on Aspen with a Fathom splash page. The girl is standing in profile, slightly turned three quarter into the audience. I’ll leave the whole Dead Behind the Eyes issue aside. I’m not even complaining about the enormous ta-tas, which are a given in this type of comic.
But what is NOT a given is the fact that this girl’s rib cage very obviously must have ended somewhere directly below her boobs. Because there’s no way a human rib cage could fit in the rest of that grotesquely elongated torso.
There are ways to draw sexy chicks without completely ignoring anatomy. God, please look at a skellington and see for yourself. Even teeny girls have ribs, ok? Women have ribs! We need them for breathing! Maybe while you’re at it you could check out the way in which the spine is connected to the pelvis. Some of those contorted poses make my back hurt just to look at them.
If you have to copy someone, copy David Mack or John Cassaday. Draw the Rags Morales way. (If you can. God know I cannot.) Just keep this in mind– Turner sucks.

Hey, I’m some random guy that googled “Michael Turner sucks”, and stumbled across this. Agree with every word, hate the hell out of his work, and the work of so many others like him. My face lit up when you mentioned David Mack, one of my favorites.
I was just in a little debate with some 42yr old guy about how Jim Lee, Michael Turner, and others are overrated. I listed Will Eisner and Frank Frazetta as some of my all time favorites and he said “I’ve heard of them, but I’m not a fan.” That makes my mind melt. I can’t understand how someone can have so little taste.
Ah, anyway, awesome entry.
